[b]Orchestra Baobab Bamba / 1994 CD-reissue of two rare LP's from the early 80's: Mouhamadou Bamba / 1980 Sibou Odia / 1981[/b] This CD edition collects two Baobab albums from 1980-81. Classic hypnotic grooves that creep up on you and bring a sense of wonder and elation. The rockin' side of Orchestra Baobab dominates Bamba, which combines the Senegalese group's Mouhamadou Bamba and Sibou Odia albums from 1980 and 1981. Pirates Choice from 1982 is a once in a lifetime gem, eerie in its floating beauty, but Bamba is different and just as incredibly wonderful in its own way. It's much louder and liver sounding, the voices laced with echo, N'Diaye's bass and Papa Ba's rhythm guitar more prominent in the mix, and Attisso brought in his noise toys and gets rowdy. The band sounds confident and in their prime, the riffs are more thoroughly worked out, mixing solo sax on "Doomou Baye" in with guitar and voices to change the emphasis, or playing the horn section riffs off the vocal harmonies. The trademark galloping rhythm guitar is fully evident on "Boulmamine," while clarinet pops up on "Ndiawolou" as Attisso goes the crystalline solo route again with some Issa Cissokho tenor sax interjections. "Gnawou" and "Autorail" both work off a rhythm riff very close to the Ritchie Valens "La Bamba", Cissokho's sax shines on the former, and the jaunty "Sou Sedhiou" features clopping drums underneath more good sax and guitar solos. "Ndiambaane" may be a little lightweight to justify its nine minutes, but not "Sibou Odia," a great 14-minute stretch-out with the percussion percolating with far more drive than the Orchestra Baobab norm. Bamba is simply a great album and the perfect place for rock-oriented listeners to enter the world of Orchestra Baobab...or the whole realm of West African pop music, for that matter. [b]Orchestra Baobab On Verra Ça ! The 1978 Paris Sessions[/b] In 1978 the group went to Paris to record an album, On Vera Ça: The 1978 Paris Sessions, which many considered to be among the group’s best work, for both performance and production values. The rumba influence is pronounced on the opening "El Son De Llama," but mostly the Latin tinge has now been absorbed into a distinctive group sound, with upbeat, sprightly songs like "Africa" built around choppy, syncopated riffs flavored by horns and a galloping rhythm guitar. "Sibam" follows that blueprint, but the tempo is faster and there's a stronger percussion presence than the light norm here. The title track is the masterpiece in this vein, the vocal blend makes the endlessly repeated riff broken up by brief solos not only bearable, but so totally hypnotic it sticks in your head for days. The slow, mournful "Tante Marie" boasts two-sax horn parts and a moody guitar melody, the opening to Barthelemy Attisso's solo opening even sounds a little bit like something from the third Velvet Underground album, of all things. "El Fuego" has more of a Latin lilt and exceptionally good voices, while the horns and those vocal harmonies again really cut through on the highly infectious "Digon." It's hard to pinpoint precisely what makes Orchestra Baobab's vocal squad sound so special, probably a combination of the quality of the different voices and the unforced naturalness and sincerity of the singing. The film follows the team over its first year, from the hunt for new players to buying a sheep to be its mascot and the side's first international games. Zoran's aggressive style soon leads to conflict with the chair of the soccer federation.
